Does anybody use them, have used them? The little black flies TORMENT Zippy (who is quite sensitive) and last year I used SWAT. SOOOOO expensive to use, so I'm considering fly leg wraps, or am open to suggestions?? Thanks for any input

My neighbor has used the liquid pour-on that goes down the back of the leg with good results... She is bombarded with the small biting black flies due to the cattle in our area, and she doesn't fly-spray everyday either. {HEY...we have a kittycat icon!!}
The product she used was called Freedom Spot-On Fly and Tick for Horses....
She said she noticed a great improvement of less flies immediately and no ticks either hanging around or on the horses. She is a trail rider so often in grass, brush and places where ticks are in abundance. She said she re-applied every 8 days {last 10 at most} and didn't notice a large change if they were bathed or the horses got wet from rain or water crossings.
I've seen some with the horse leg wrap fly things...they still stomp and those slide down the leg it appears to me. I don't know if anything truly works for long...
Ive also seen people use the fly repellent neck strap, tail attachment and hoof bands...
I think the flies build up a resistance to all of them periodically and you need to change up what you are using..
I wish you luck...when you find the secret let us all know please!!

I tried the fly wraps for the legs years ago. They are ok if you have a nice groomed pasture. Otherwise they get torn up from weeds etc. They might make them better now, don't know? I would try the spot thing.

our fly leg wraps picked up EVERY piece of sticks, hay, and any, and everything else possible inside of them. after the first roll they were full, i was afraid of sores, or irritation especially since they still stomp their feet. we found out from an old mule man in our area that the BEST fly deterrent is pyrhana, (SP)aerosol! we buy it by the case, in off season for about $10 a can. right now it is on sale through valley vet for $12.29 per can, by the case. ours were a little skittish at first, but when they realized it works hubby sprays all of them, even the mule w/out halters, and can even spray their ears! there is actually more in the can than you would expect 1 can lasts a week with 3 horses, and the mule. that is spraying them about 5 days in the week. it works better than anything i have tried in 40+ years of owning horses

Good to know! I might have to look into that pyrhana, (SP)aerosol stuff.
I tried the fly boots on Zena once. It didn't go well. She was freaked about having something wrapped around her lower legs (something we clearly need to work on ), but besides that, the problem I had with them was that they wouldn't stay up, they just kept sliding down her legs. Very frustrating!
