My big dog canagan had a seizure last night, I was losing it with my hubby who was hysterical, I'm trying to keep calm and hold his legs still while stroking his head(dog)while hubby is freaking and crying like one of those Arabic women, I told him stay calm its just a seizure he will prob be fine but hubby was convinced dog was dying.
Canagan was and is still a little disorientated this morning but better, I think it was a piece of jerky that hubby gave him as he gave him it 20mins if that before seizure, iTS the only thing different that happened so hoping it was some kind of toxic seizure, I'm forever telling hubby to stop treating them as I feed them raw and its not good for them, hopefully he's learned a lesson!
I'll call the vet just to tell them, I have pet insurance.
One thing I learned last night which I didn't know is that dogs cannot swallow their tongues, I've only dealt with small dogs seizing and hug them, I noticed as I was at canagans head his mouth and gums were blueish and worried he was swallowing tongue and stupidly tried to get it and he clamped on me, just a warning and heads up in hopes this helps someone else, seizure lasted around a minute, felt longer though:(

Our dog {Max, RIP} had seizures...no one knew why they started although we spent thousands trying to find out and if they were correctable through diet, environment change... Benadryl for us worked to relax the dog and help to quiet his brain. He wasn't though thrashing like a epileptic episode is how yours sounds, but a "going out of his mind with demons" we had happening. We ended up putting the dog on phenobarbital tablets and when/if he had a breakthrough seizure he was given benadryl tablets to help settle him. Our dog would just about crawl inside you while seizing in fear...he just wanted to hide. No amount of holding helped... I never though had the shaking, trembling epileptic stuff that yours sounds like...scary. I probably would of been bawling my eyes out too... for you for keeping it together!!

I wonder if he got a piece of jerky treat stuck in his throat, i hate those jerky treats or anything that is made with rawhide. if your hubby wants to treat how about cereal bones. or cookies. glad you stayed calm . my hubby would have been freaking out yelling at me to call the vet, get this or get that. instead of jut trying to old on to the dog.

Thanks guys:)
He's good now just tired, its the high sodium content that causes it, I checked nothing was stuck, my bones are sore where he clamped on and my legs were bare so have a few nice scratches.
Vet says to bring him in if it happens again but meantime to keep him quiet no running round as its been a strain on his heart.
No more treats or human food, its been a good thing, scared hubby!

If you feed raw diet than how does he get that much sodium in his diet to cause a seizure ? perhaps switch him to boiled food and strain out the broth. ? glad he will be ok and hope he never has it again. smileys-dogs-171634

I've never owned a dog with epilepsy, altho, I have seen some of them have seizures before. It is scary to see. Sometimes seizures can be caused by a blow to the head, or, I've also heard, in the case of cats and dogs, exposure to certain chemicals used on the lawn to kill weeds. Dogs and cats get the chemical on their paws and lick it off.
I actually have epilepsy, controlled by medication. Mine began from a car accident, where I suffered a head injury. Swallowing the tongue is a superstition, or 'wives tale'. Usually seizures are treatable., or at least controllable with medication. Sometimes, a seizure is a 1x occurrence, and never happens again. Hope this is the case for your pup smileys-dogs-171634

yes redzip, swallowing tongue is not possible, our one wolf hybrid was a diabetic in his old age. he had seizures occasionally, and in his case a small amount of grape jam rubbed directly on his gums brought him right back to normal, aside from some shakiness. hope this was a one time thing also, at least hubby will listed now!

Oh my goodness, how frightening!! I'm glad he seems to be okay.
My husband eats terribly and gives the dogs treats of the crap he eats including things like jerky, sausages, spicy or saucy stuff, bacon, eggs, whatever. It drives me nuts because they're gaining weight and they get gassy. It's bad enough to have him walking around belching after he eats crap and gobbles it up so fast but having the dogs lying around burping and passing wind is too much. With the nausea from the chemo I was ready to kick them all out, husband and dogs.

Sorry LD! I feel like I hijacked your thread! I'm glad you posted about it because its a really good point and a good reminder about the things we feed our dogs that we should think twice about. I mentioned it to my hubby but he did his usual dismissal of anything I tell him. He thinks it funny when the dogs have gas.
