Stormy has always been a little stinker. When he way my only horse I could keep him more in line, but now with three of them I am afraid I have allowed him to become a bit full of himself. I think part of the problem is I don't ride him. I was riding him, but he had a catch to his step, so I took him for a lameness exam. Turned out he must have suffered a broken right rear hock, as a foal. The vet told me I could have it frozen, or it would fuse on it's own. He didn't say I couldn't ride him, but I decided I didn't want to take any chances with my heart horse, so he became a retired 6 year old. He has been resting for 3 years now, and his manors are just awful.
Well the other day I was reading about a person who had rested her heart horse for three years following an injury, and was once again able to ride him. I would like to ride Stormy a little bit too. Her horse could run silly in the pasture, and Stormy can run silly too.
Any way I made my first attempt at a video while the horses were playing, and I just want to ask if anyone sees any reason why I can't try to ride the little grey Arab a little bit. Sorry the video is 3 minutes long, but I don't know how to edit it yet. All three of my darlings are playing, and had been for awhile so the kicks weren't quite as high as they are in the beginning of their play time, bit if I can get the link to Photobucket to show up and anyone can see the video and wants to give me an opinion on if I could possibly think about riding my Stormy boy again, please let me know.

Cute video! I actually think its a benefit for horses to be ridden, only if its just a walking trail ride. When they romp around like those horses, how much harm could YOU possibly do? I know with my old gelding, Red, his arthritis got soooo much worse, when I had to stop riding him. Of course he was considerably older, but I often think if I had just ridden him, at a walk, more often, it might have been beneficial in keeping his knee from blowing up with the arthritis.
I would consult with my vet first, but I didn't see much sign of lameness with your SPUNKY grey horse! 884530

I did not see the video yet as it is early. but having arabians they heal rather well and can be sound. have your vet give an exam and perhaps xray to determine what is going on and perhaps if all is ok, than start with ground work and go up from there yes they have a tendency to get bullish. my arabian mare was that way, but she kept 25 horses in line for me

Ya know, as delicate as some horses are, I have seen some horses with the most beat up legs, etc. and they just - keep going! 884530 I do think that arabs are very HARDY little things, and they are generally built in such a way, that they don't have too many break downs. Unlike other breeds that have become so genetically flawed, they are essentially, born broke down I, personally, wouldn't hesitate to attempt to bring that little horse back to riding condition, given I checked with my vet first. Good luck, and keep us posted.

My JR blew out his stifle and I retired him for about 3-4 yrs. He seemed to be ok out in the field when playing and running. I did notice that on that leg he does short stride on it.I just started riding him again. He feels strong and doesn't really feel off. Hasn't came up lame or sore with it. So I would give it a try, Just start out easy and if things go good keep riding him. He will tell you if anything hurts. His way of going maybe different. But if it doesn't hurt him he will compensate for it. There's only one way to find out...Ride him....

My 18 year old mare have bad arthritis. We bought her 4 years ago because she was negelected by previous owner. She didnt know anything. She had special shoes for some time. It is important to exercise that kind of horses all the time. I run with her often. And walk her. But I dont ride her.

Looks like he's feeling good to me:) What's that weird noise?! The noise is my camera trying to keep focus. I was inside the house filming through the window, so the horses wouldn't see me and stop. Mingiz it was you and JR who gave me the idea to ride. I have to do something with Stormy, but my old arthritic knees can't handle a ton of ground work, and Stormy needs some work. Last night he was feeling frisky, so while I was letting Chief through the gate Stormy reached over and bit him hard right on the butt. I was behind Chief when he bit him. EEEEK! Stormy might be my heart horse, but I can't do him much good if he gets me hurt. I know I know, I should have never let him get so out of control. He just requires so much work. I am Stormys third rescue, and I will be the last. Without his incredible spirit he wouldn't be alive, and it is his incredible spirit that I love. Here is Stormy when I got him. The stains on his hip bones is from open sores, that his bones rubbed through his skin.

Thank you, but I think he may have rescued me. Honey had agreed to only let me start "looking" for a horse. He hadn't agreed to actually let me buy one, until we met Stormy. I cried the whole way home, and when we got home Honey said, "don't you think you better stop crying about that horse and busy finding someone with a horse trailer so you can go get him? There is an old American west saying, "you don't look a gift horse in the mouth" In other words if someone is giving you a horse it is probably a really old one. When I sent pictures of the condition I found Stormy, to his owners family, he was given to me.
