So, in my thread on sheath cleaning I mentioned that I'd seen a gelding on a rescue site that I liked. Seeing as how I'm not working right now I probably won't ever get him, but I can daydream, right? His name is Jax. He was rescued as a yearling in April 2013, so he's coming up on 2 years old. He was rescued from a feedlot, no papers or breed info. Here he is the day after rescue, with winter fuzzies and a touch of ringworm: And here he is in the summer: Any thoughts on breed? There were other yearlings rescued at the same time who people were saying looked like they had "wildie" in them (Alberta's wild horses) so don't know if that's the case with him as well. And I'm not sure what blood the wildies have in them, so that doesn't exactly help. I do know there have been cases of wildies being caught and sent to feedlots, so he could be from a wild herd.

Probably quarter horse or breeding stock paint. Even wildies have certain breeds in them but the wildies tend to be very thick horses with lots of bone. I'm pretty sure I know what rescue he's at. I have some issues with them as a rescue. If that's where he is I doubt they've very much with him at all, unfortunately.

He is very pretty. The rescue starts with a B if that confirms where he is. And yeah, from the looks of it they are just out to pasture with little handling. He was adopted out but returned due to a relationship break up, so not sure what was done with him, but it says he's halter broke at least.
nhg I hope the issues you have with the rescue don't have anything to do with care of the horses :( That would be sad.

I would LOVE to get him, but it would depend on getting a job soon...I applied for one at the company where hubby works that would pay about 14% more than my last job to start, annual increases and after 4 years would go up to 40% more than my last one - it's unionized so guaranteed increases. So fingers crossed. The other downside is that I'm pretty sure where I board is full, so I'd have to find somewhere else. Though I know of a place that has good reviews that is all outdoor board for about half what I pay now. No indoor arena, but for the next year or so while he grows up it could work. I dunno. It's been so long since I've worked with one so young. I'm still trying to get my confidence back in the saddle, which isn't easy with the winter making my knees hurt so much I haven't ridden since November Although I guess by the times he's ready to start under saddle I'd have more confidence, and more money to send him to a trainer. And I have tons of confidence on the ground so could do ground work with him. I guess we'll have to wait and see how the job market plays out. No job = no more horses. I wonder how tall he'll end up being. The site doesn't say how tall he is now, but I imagine at not even 2 years he has a lot of growing left to do.

If he is at a rescue and it is nearby why not go and volunteer to work with him. in the mean time hope you get the job and his cannon bones seem to show he should be around the 14 + side. with is ok. at least for me easy on easy off small horses.
and you are trying to convince yourself that you can work with him since he is growing, and perhaps the boarding place will allow you to work off some board. just pushing you. lol

The rescue is about 3 hours away unfortunately. I also hope I get the job! I like having money! I feel giant on 14h horses...Lucy is 15.1 and I feel tall on her. I'm used to the 16.1h TBs I had before. Though I guess looks don't matter out on the trail Yeah, I am trying to convince myself LOL I think I could do the groundwork no problem but would probably send him out for under saddle training. I have enough knee problems without adding being bucked off by a youngin'!

He has a beautiful face and refined look to him and his neck, throatlatch area.
He may have some Thoroughbred in him too...
Pretty boy...as long as you have the space and resources to put him in a pasture for a year and grow into himself, stronger and bigger...go for it.
No one says you must be the first one aboard you know...find a trainer to get the first dozen rides on him, save your knees and back and go enjoy!!
Yup, enabler here!!

LOL I shouldn't have posted - you guys are enablers! My hubby is a manager and knows a bunch of other managers in different areas of the company, including the manager of the job I applied for (an HR job). He's also buddy buddy with the Director of HR and sent him an email saying I'd applied for the job, so fingers crossed I at least get an interview! Come on ATCO, hire me so I can get this boy! LOL Hey lorddaxter - wanna board him for me?

Shadowlark, honestly I've never been there and I understand their intentions are good. And I do think they're looked after. But what I see is the same horses year after year with updates like 'we're working on being able to give her treats' and 'she's starting to let us get close' and 'hasn't been haltered yet'. I have them on FB and she said she'd taken twelve hours and had updated all the horses and they still have comments like that. They rescue them at auction and just warehouse them or foster them out but don't seem to care if the foster ever works with them. The horses are happy enough because they're just hanging out on the land with trees and it's heaven but the point is to rehome them. I'll even see things like 'we haven't halter trained him yet' for babies that were born on their place and are a year old.
I know some go out for training because we used the guy that does it but they're few and far between. I also disagree with rescuing very crippled horses who are suffering and letting them retire there.

I forgot to say that I've seen this young guy before and thought he was gorgeous because I'm a sucker for red duns but I don't see a line down his back.

NHG - I actually got the same impression from them - they are big into rescuing as many as they can, but little work done with them. At least this guy is halter broke, although I guess that could just mean they can put a halter on, not necessarily that he will lead well. I do see the odd update saying a horse has been adopted, but I think more could be adopted if they worked with them more. I don't know what the best solution is - rescue 100+ horses but not be able to work with them, or not rescue and have them go to slaughter. And I also don't see the line down his back...maybe it's thin and only seen from above?

one of my clients went to view a potential horse there last summer, she was not impressed, I looked him up and found out where he is, she didnt go into detail but she got another 2 horses from somewhere else and every now and again says how glad she is she didnt get involved with them, she wanted to volunteer there too

What wasn't she impressed with? Just how they don't really do anything with the horses? Or is there something else? Eeep sounds like this rescue isn't very reputable!

Well, just saw on Facebook that Jax and 4 other horses were all adopted by the same person! Lucky horses! Hope they've all found their forever homes!
