Next week we are getting a feeder pig.. Our neighbor CJ is picking up 4 of them. He will raise them at his place. As he is set up for them. So we will have some fresh pork chops and bacon....Then the next thing will be a calf to raise.. Again CJ will raise them. His property is across the road from us. I love it here. We can raise our own meat and know what's in it... The price to take them and have them butchered and packaged isn't bad either...
Thought about getting some chickens but I remember as a kid butchering them and I hated it. I would want a few for eggs only....

We raised them when I was a kid. We always gave them food scraps...My favorite part of it was trying to ride them...
Then when we butchered I would watch everything but the killing. I use to think it was fun blowing into the casings to make sausage..... Back then we did it all ourselves...

I live in the middle of "BEEF" country...everyone around here has cattle, raises them and most do their own butchering, cutting and wrapping for their families consumption.... I can't do it... if I feed it, I just can't eat it!! I can eat what I know others raised....but just not what was in my backyard.. Chickens...can do eggs but not eat the bird either. I am a confirmed supermarket meat shopper.... sigh

We also live in BEEF country. I would rather eat beef and pork that I raised than buy it from a store. All the crap they put in it and preservatives, You can have it..Fresh meat taste a lot better. You could always buy one and have it butchered as you like. That way you didn't raise it..Plus in the long run it's cheaper.. The only reason I won't do chickens is they are a pita to do.I hate the smell of wet feathers or burnt ones..I can do the processing but I can't kill them.. So I will get those at the store...

I am lucky enough that my "supermarket" has the grass fed, no hormone meat...it is actually the local beef raiser who went the extra mile to get a butchering license and facility to process the meat. He brings his cattle to the slaughter house, then retrieves their meat to cut up as he wishes. He is positive it is his cattle too as he watches them be processed.... So, I pay more $$ per pound maybe for mine but don't get attached to Bessie or Burt... Have no idea how much it costs to raise a cow to butchering size...won't ever find out either!!

Yeh I coudnt do it either, I had a potbelly pig stay with me a while, so cute but man it screamed when you picked it up, I have some cute pics of it somewhere sharing food with a pomeranian and snuggled in a blanket with just its snout sticking out:)
I could do chickens for eggs, I could maybe at a push gut a fish if I cut its head off first but ugh I couldnt do a chicken.
