I can't remember if I posted about this before, I think I did. That LD and Heather and another friend and I went to see Vic Bennett who is a high end saddle maker and got to tour his shop and learn a lot about saddle fit. My friend is having him custom fit her horse because he's a bit oddly built in the shoulder area. He came to see her horse yesterday and to try a tree on him. My friend was working so I got to go out and get the horse ready for him to see him.
He was showing me how a tree should fit on a horse and why it should never be too far forward. I knew that but have never seen it like that. I have a tendancy to put mine a little too far forward so it was really good to see why you don't want to. He also mentioned again what he'd told us when we went there. That a wider gullet will not be a better fit for a wider horse. It just makes the gullet drop lower. It's basic physics and I always wondered why people did that so it was good to hear from a respected saddlemaker that my thoughts were correct.

What a priceless experience. I would love to talk with someone like that and just absorb everything they have to say.

What a great experience for you to talk to a professional and at least get some input on the proper position to put the saddle. i used to put the saddle too far forward also until i was shown why it should be back further. the skirting interferes with the shoulder blades forward and back movement and the common thought is to have a saddle wider or narrower to fit better but really it should be just a bit further back. .
