The United States Eventing Association is trying to pass a proposal that all eventing vests must be ASTM or BETA certified. The vest that 95% of people around here wear (the classic Tipperary) is not certified by either. Since I will be showing soon, I need to get a vest and I would rather get a vest that I can wear for years to come rather than get one I will/might have to replace in a few years since they are not cheap by any means (even though it will probably be a few years before the proposal passes and is strictly enforced).
So for those of you that have/or currently do wear safety vests, what are you wearing? Likes/dislikes about your vest? Suggestions of what to get/what to stay away from? Currently in the UK, vests have to be BETA certified and I have found a few on ebay from the UK that are reasonably priced, even factoring in the shipping.

That is a good price for that vest. I had one a few years ago and loved it. I found it comfortable, but certainly still did its job.
Other than that I think that Charles Owen does vests. I have seen a few around but never tried one on. I think they have some variety of certification.

Apollo - did you find the Outlyne to be overly hot in the summer? I mean I know they all are going to be pretty hot. I found a UK website (the parent company to Airowear) - I can get one in black for about $192 or I can get it in custom colors for $239. Shipping will be about $45. Compare that to the black one on ebay for $190 + 23 shipping (it also would be shipping from the UK). I'm kind of between two sizes so I emailed the parent company with my measurements to see what they recommend. Here's another thing though: The black one (from either place) *might* be here in time for my show Oct 18th; a custom color one would definitely not be here in time for the October show. So that throws another wrench into the mix - what happens if the vest doesn't get here in time? There is one lady that I ride with that is about my size. I guess I could ask her if I could borrow her vest (she's not riding in the October show). Thoughts? PS - here's a website to see what the custom colors would look like (this is not one of the sites I'm thinking of ordering from). I'm thinking my colors will be purple and black so that's what I'm looking at (purple front and back, black sides). www.airowear.co.uk/en/xc-colours/

I didn't find it excessively warm. It doesn't really stick out in my mind as being warmer than any other vest. The biggest thing I remember about it was how comfortable it was. I more or less forgot I had it on after 15 or so minutes of riding. I think it would be important to note that we have a different type of heat here in the summer. It is very dry with almost no humidity. Very arid. I'm not sure how that would change how a vest retains heat. The price must have come down since I had mine. (I had customers colours though). I think if I were in your position and there was a chance thst neither vest might arrive in time for your show I would try to borrow one so that you know you are good to go, you can order the vest you want for your next show.

The company got back to me and suggested I get the smaller of the two sizes (which happens to be $15 cheaper!). I think I am going to spend the extra $50 and get custom colors. So do I get one that is purple front and back with black sides or black front and back with purple sides (note that the velcro will always be black) ? www.airowear.co.uk/en/xc-colours/ mini-graphics-smileys-801959

Thanks LD. That's the one thing keeping me from doing a custom color one. At least if I got it in black and it didn't fit, I could sell it on ebay and try to get my money back.
Apollo - was your Outlyne pretty true to size???

Sorry just realised thats the one you are looking at!
Mine was too small plus it wasnt as flexible as I wanted, I returned it and the shipping was horrendous, lesson learned!

Shoot!!!!! I'm not too worried about the stiffness as they are supposed to get more supple as you use them (the body heat has some effect).
I just called my local tack store. They actually have the two sizes of the Outlyne I need to try on~~ Yay!!! I will go do that on Friday then can order online.

Glad you local tack store has some to try on! That should help a bunch.
I really can't remember if it fit true to size or not to be totally honest with you. I am sort of awkwardly shaped (large chest, tiny waist, shoulders that would make the Hulk jealous lol!) so going off how something fits me is generally not accurate for the rest of the population. My mom ordered it for me as a birthday gift, I just picked the colours out.
I didn't find mine to be stiff at all, a bit heavy perhaps, but not overly so. I will ask my friends if theirs fit fairly accurately.

So once you try it on and if comfortable and fit is right...
Ask that tack shop if they will meet or beat a online price. If they say yes, well....that then buys you a vest. If no...well then you order. Many places though still charge for shipping so make sure you figure that cost into the online one...and sales tax might be on one or the other or both. I honestly was rather stunned at the price. I know they can be pricey but that is pricey. Worth every penny if you take a fall and it does the intended job of protection, even still .... ...
