I've never known the Fire Deptmt to have a problem like this before. Poor horse is an innocent in all this too ,.., I can say this (here, but not publicly) ,.., the FD doesn't have much security, nor do they oversee the babies/mares as diligently as they could/maybe SHOULD when they are held at the fairgrounds, after the sale ends, and the season ends. My friend bought a filly a few years ago, she was too young to take on the day of the sale, so they (the FD) kept her, with her momma till she was more mature. While she was there, the momma died, and no one notified my friend that the filly had become orphaned. She found out when she called about the pick up date. They gave her some of her purchase price back, but it was kind of screwed up IMO. *Let me know if you can't access the link* www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1194403170574793&id=129598427055278

I'm a little confused. The fb article didn't really say what happened. One of the horses that was for sale disappeared? And did your friend not take the baby once she found out that it had been orphaned? Or why did they give her some money back? If she took it then is it okay now? Sorry if I missed something but I read the article twice and still didn't get it.

Sorry if I missed something but I read the article twice and still didn't get it. I believe this baby was stolen from the fairgrounds. That has never happened before,., altho there really isn't much security at the fairgrounds,., BUT Chincoteague is a tiny, island town, and the ONLY way you are leaving is across a bridge. Apparently this baby is missing from the fenced corral area at the fairgrounds. The FD keeps the young babies that are too young to be taken from their mommas, after the July roundup and auction, at the fairgrounds until the Fall, when they are old enough to go to their new homes. THEN, the FD (the Saltwater Cowboys) do another roundup and swim the herd (mammas and the 'buy back' babies) back to Assategue Island. The 'buy back babies' that the FD keeps, are there to keep certain bloodlines in the herd. Generally what happens is, people, or businesses, will bid on the 'buy back babies' to raise money for the FD, and use that as a tax write off.
The FD is able to replenish the herd with colts and fillies from bloodlines they like, they make money to use to keep the auction, and well being of the herds going, and the person/business gets the tax write off. The FD retains ownership of the baby. This baby was 'buy back' to replenish the herd and was going back to the island (Assateugue Island) during the Fall Roundup in October (usually on Columbus Day weekend). BUT apparently this baby has been stolen
My friend, on the hand, bought a young filly a few years ago, and it also stayed at the fairgrounds until the Fall Roundup. At the Fall Roundup, those babies, too young to leave for a new home at the time of the auction, go to their new homes with the people who bought them.
My point was (about my friend) that the security is minimal at the fairgrounds bc of the situation that happened with her filly. The momma had died not long after the July auction and no one EVER called and let her know. She could have gone and gotten her filly sooner, and put it on formula. It was orphaned and no one from the FD let her know.
Again, my point, lax security. But after this, I doubt that will be the case. I do think my friend's situation was a fluke,., but the FD made a restitution type deal by giving her some of her purchase price back.
Does that make it more clear?

I saw it on fb this morning and thought, how could people come into the area and walk out with a little baby horse and not be seen. i have a feeling by this time that little filly is miles away and some states away. again these and other ponies that are sold at auction should be micro chipped and that chip number be on the papers. I know a chip is only as good as the person that scans the pony, but with dogs it was rare and now it is normal procedure to scan cats and dogs. hope she is found.
