Thought you guys would enjoy seeing this,.., My cousin found this in his Grandfather's safe (his Mom's Dad, our Father's were brothers, but its not that Grandfather). Thought it was pretty neat! " $110 Twelve months after date I promise to pay or cause to be paid unto Edward H. Griffin the sum of one hundred and ten dollars for one mare, guaranteed to be sound and gentle, with good (eyes?) witness my hand and seal this 13th of January AD 1860. Henry P. Kelly "

That's really cool. And that was a lot of money back then - it must have been a great mare. Too bad her name isn't mentioned (though if you look that far back in records names are usually something like Bob's mare.

As i read it he basically used the mare for a year and than paid for her.?? how fascinating that such items are hidden in a safe or box until someone decides to see what is hidden. what a treasure. frame it for all to see.

I love the handwriting, many of the old documents that I've seen have that handwriting.

Those are the treasures we love to find. I hope it gets framed or something to preserve it, what a find! I have my grandfather's money diary from when he was in dental school near the turn of the century; tuition was less than $25 and a little more than a dollar per month for gas lights.
