Our riding instructor/trainer recommended that I read 'The Gymnasium Of The Horse', originally written by Gustav Steinbrecht as a reference to her teaching style, training, etc. Sooo, I bought it on my Nook and started reading it this weekend. What books have you read, or stand out to you personally, as a great reference, or great insight, in your riding career? Am very interested to hear what everyone is reading, has read, and why it has significance to your horsemanship. Thanks!!

I have a hard time using a book to improve riding skills but do learn a lot from watching videos. As far as horsemanship in general I like Buck Brannaman and Mark Rashid.

The book that most impacted my earliest understanding of the seat, aids, etc,.., and real insight into trained riding, ie. equitation, was 'Hunt Seat Equitation' By George Morris. 'Think Harmony With Horses' By Ray Hunt first helped me recognize, understand, and strive to improve my working relationship with my horse. There are others as well, I've read many,.., 'Cavelleti' By Ingrid Klimke help me understand how to build the horse up, athletically, to better carry itself with more balance. Just to name a few

I've read a few books by Dorrance and Hunt and I agree with Lady, but over the years and several re-reads I've had my ah ha moments; shows you that its the doing within the context of the reading that makes a difference. As goes with DVDs and all the rest. I'd say that Buck Brannaman and Mark Rashid have done more to increase my confidence in my own judgement (as little but growing as that is) more than anything else. They are able to articulate what I feel and so I can have more confidence in the face of very strong opposing viewpoints. Books and DVDs and all of that are so important to those of us who are doing this horse thing alone. As always the proof is in the pudding.
