So I have been given the opportunity to start working with a new horse, with the option to buy him if it works out. His name is Webster, he is a 10 year old Paint/draft cross. He used to foxhunt tier 2. He belongs to my current barn owners boyfriend, but they don't do much with him and don't want to see him sitting around anymore. He hasn't been in work since last summer I believe. He's sweet, but out of shape and horribly attached to "his" pony. I'm going to use this thread to chronicle my work with him! I pulled Webster out of the field today to see what he would do. I'll probably need to work with him slowly and get his mind back. I was also told that he loves having his own person as well, and he likes me, I've been able to do more with him and more easily then the BO has been able to do and I just started working with him. I brought him out, let him graze, brushed him and he was great. I brought him to the ring and put him on the lunge line. He lunges! He called to the pony a few times, but really nothing excessive. He was a little up and not really listening when I started lunging him but he settled down pretty fast. First Video: Start of the lunging session Second Video: End of the lunging session Third Video: Just playing with him a bit. At one point the pony called to him and he chose to come with me instead so that made me happy! And A couple pictures

That last photo is a hoot. he is handsome and huge. can i make a suggestion. and this is my opinion and i have been training horses for 30 years. try not to kiss and say the words "come on" kissing is great to get the horse to pay attention and perhaps when you are riding him to go over a jump, BUT on the ground they sometimes do not know what it means. and the words "come on" well he is already there so the words walk, trot, trot on, canter , stand, over, whoa. back should all be understood by the horse in one word commands.
other than that, i applaud you and your willingness to work with the horses knowing he is going to need some re-schooling.

Wow, he's stunning! Looks like he really wants to join up! So you've moved barns already, right? This isn't the place where she was being so witchy, this is the new place? Or am I mixed up?

I like him - he looks very receptive to learning.
nhg - I believe this is at the new place.
