Does anyone else have problems with dogs (and cats) being given away for free only to end up as bait animals in the dog fighting world? Perhaps it's just a problem by me? I see so many dogs and cats being given away for free when people don't realize what could happen to them. I always try to advise the person to charge a re-homing fee and/or check vet references. Just because someone seems nice and looks like a good home doesn't mean they aren't doing evil things. Makes me so mad and sad at the same time.
Ok, sorry, vent over.

I agree with you. Unfortunately, most people who end up with unwanted litters, aren't responsible pet owners anyway. If they would have gotten their pet neutered, they wouldn't have babies to give away. They probably won't check into the homes their little ones go to.
There are some people who won't give up their unwanted babies to a rescue, or Humane society, because they think they will automatically be euthanized. They would rather give them away, to unknown people, and let them take their chances, and not worry that they are adding even more numbers to the unwanted pet population.
I imagine you are going to need a really big soap box to stand on for this vent MM, because I expect there will be a lot of other members, who will want to stand up here, on this soap box, with you.

I think unfortunately that is happening everywhere. Too sad.

you are so right. I had a person here who was helping us and over coffee he and others were talking about the south and he just blurted out his dislike for cats, and how he used them as gator bait. I was enraged. he was laughing telling how he used them on the lines. needless to say he was never here again. when I see free I send a message to them and say to get adoption fee. and to spay or neuter. just makes me sick.

The sad thing is a lot of them aren't puppies, they are 1 year+ dogs that people can't/won't keep for some stupid reason.

We have a problem here that lot of out shelters are giving dogs to another countries thinking they are going in to good home, and they actually end up in fur or meat industry. As you said if person looks nice does not mean he or she is good.

We have had a problem with that and pets getting stolen lately. People fuss about a rehoming fee but those that fuss, don't deserve the animal because if they won't pay a small rehoming fee, they won't pay for larger vet bills. We definitely need more affordable spay/neuter here. We're getting more programs, but one vet charges $240 JUST for the surgery for a small dog WITH the shelter voucher.
We tried to catch a fighting ring when I was working with the Humane Society but they were too slick. We never caught them.
