Lipizzan breed got it's name by the place Lipica(Slovenia), where by the instruction of the Viennese court 1580. was formed a horse stud with the task of breeding horses that would be suitable for economic and military purposes. Goal was a baroque Spanish horse.
Written evidence suggests that initial breeding was based on 9 Spanish stallions and 24 Karst mares. Later the blood was constantly ennobled with Karst, Spanish, Arabian, Kladruber horses.
There is 8 basic stallion lines in Lipizzan breed: Pluto (Denmark), Mestoso and Favory(Kladruby), Conversano i Napolitano(Napoli), Siglavy(Arab), Tulipan(Croatia), Iniciato(Hungary).
Lipizzaner is characterized by generosity, intelligence and stamina. The head is well-balanced, medium-sized, moderately convex profile, large eyes, short movable ears.
Today Lipizzaner has an average height of 155-160 cm and weight up to 500 kg.
The neck is medium length, deep and sublime toward the ridge, often swan. The hull is deep, dense, muscular chest, reef unexpressed, blades steep.
Tail well set. The legs are muscular. Stroke is correct. Trot is elastic with a high leg action, but gallop is short.
The Lipizzaner foals are born dark-colored then changes over time in a lighter shade.
The most common color are gray to light gray, but there are also darker versions (black and bay).
In Croatia Lipizzaner breeding began in 1806, with the arrival of horses from Lipica stud farm, which were running from Napoleon and then hide in Dj(D)akovo stud.
Now some representatives from the beginning of the lines(not the first ones)
19 yrs Lipizzan gray old Spanish type Pluto II, by 12 Pluto II out of 20 Neapolitano Capriola.
11 yrs black Lipizzaner 81 Maestoso IV, by Maestoso I, out of 276 Neapolitano.
Measurements: 165, 187, 21 cm, weight 535 kg.
Lipizzaner stallion Favory, Hungarian import, by Favory XVIII, out of 23 Maestoso XIX, Bábolna bred. At one time a main stallion in the Kladruby stud farm used for the blood refreshment of the Kladrubian grays.
