Shadow, I nearly got tears in my eyes reading about your adventures trick training, that is just so dang wonderful! And of course Lucy is great but obviously YOU ARE TOO! Very inspirational. I taught Peaches how to play soccer... kinda. The same thing about touch her nose for a bite of corn and yes, FOOD!!!! Peachie will try to fake me out and just pass her nose by the ball, but no sir, you gotta push the ball now, she's such a foodie, just like her mom Last winter we played broomball but she gets kinda bored chasing the ball around, not even corn can get her to play it as much as I'd like. I'll have to come up with another trick and I do have plans for a pedestal but when does anyone have time to make one? I think I'll start with just a piece of wood on the ground, at least its a target.

How exciting for you and lucy, with the trainer complimenting you about lucy makes you proud that all of that work has paid off. and still more fun in the future. yes fun. riding is not all there is to horses and bonding. ground work and teaching small tricks are fun. next time try to tickle under the chin for a lip curl. .

I bought a pedestal off the trainer - figured it would take forever to figure out how to make one and actually get around to making one, so I just bought one LOL Picked it up this morning. Practiced "smile" and she was doing better - she's curling her lips and kinda flapping them, so just have to work on getting her to hold the lip curl. We also practiced "touch target" which she's good at until you move it further away....I think she's just been so trained to just stand until asked to move so she doesn't want to step towards it, so we'll work on that. Got a couple of small "waves" out of her (and by waves I mean she lifted her foot when asked) so there was improvement there. Then we practiced pedestal. Walked her up to it, tapped the bag of her leg and she went right up on the pedestal! I'm such a proud horsey mom! I thought I'd have to at least place one foot up and remind her, but she did it all herself horselady you are so right - I think there are so many people who just think owning a horse is all about riding. But I love just bonding and playing with her. Riding is great, but I think it's good to break things up and try different things. My parents are coming out from Ontario to visit Thursday - Monday. Can't wait to show off some tricks! I'll try and get more pics as well!

So fun! That's awesome that you were able to buy a pedestal and that she remembered the trick so well! I can't wait to hear more about how your trick training is coming along!
I decided to try the "Hug" trick with my girls. They did really well, but of course they LOVE their treats! I figured that one was probably the easiest for me to try on my own, so I'm definitely going to keep working on it.
I agree, riding is great, but there is just so much more to owning horses! I love spending time playing and just bonding with my girls.

Oh dear, don't get me started on the question; So did you ride?! Horses are soooo much more than that. As are most mammals. I'd get very sad if I was at work more than 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and I like my job but there is a whole lot more to do!
A former HTian friend of mine taught her horse to play basketball, it is a hoot!

My parents were here from Ontario over the weekend so we showed off some tricks. Dad wasn't fast enough to catch "Smile" or "Touch" (smile is still a work in progress) but got Hugs and Pedestal :) Big hugs for me: Hugs for me & hubby: She couldn't wait to get on the pedestal!

The last one is my favourite. How tall is she? She looks quite small, or you are super tall

She is about 15.1 and I'm 5'7. I feel really tall when I ride, as I'm used to my old mares who were 16.1/16.2. Though, it's nice that's she's smaller since I'm using a western saddle with her! Those things are HEAVY! LOL

Cool! Love the pictures! She's a beautiful girl. I teach the hug by facing the horse's neck with my left arm under their neck but the treat is in my right hand behind my back. It helps if they know you have it. The next time the treat is at my right side. They learn it super fast. And the way you described is how we teach them to lie down as an extension of the bow. I did a trick training clinic with Gord Searle shortly after Prince- who had been my daughter's horse- became mine. He was miserable with me as his owner but previously liked me and he already knew some tricks so I thought we'd bond. Wrong. He refused to do the tricks he knew and refused to try anything new. He was the worst horse there and spent most of the weekend with his ears back. Thank god he eventually decided I was okay as an owner.

Yeah, we also do hug facing the neck like you described...dad just didn't get a good pic LOL
HAHA Glad Prince decided to like you again! Now that you're friends again, you should try more tricks with him!

Sadly, one of Prince's negatives is that learning new things makes him cranky. He thinks he knows everything already. I had him at a reining clinic one time and she was showing us a different way to teach roll backs where you turn the horse into the wall to stop them going forward and make them turn back over the haunch. Mr Smarty Pants already knows how to do roll backs so he started rearing at the wall. Things like this make him cranky and then I get to see his scowly face where he pushes his eyebrows down over his eyes like a cartoon. He refuses to do the Spanish walk unless I'm asking him for something and he can't figure out what I want. Then he does it as a last resort. He's a wonderful horse but he's got a bit of a quirky personality.
