It has been many years since I made them and then it was done for 40 - 60 horses in quantity...
So with the sand issue here and Chance grazing most of the time...
We either need a bran mash or sand clear so no sand colic please...
Which would you do?
And better yet...
How much bran would you use. I was thinking maybe as a once a week thing instead of once a month as he is grazing every day...
Chance also is fed Sr. feed 3x a day along with hay always available and pasture, plentiful {cool?} shaded water.
So...bran, water, some oil (mineral or what kind?) some feed all mixed together and fed... What am I forgetting???
Vet was here yesterday for a look-see on health. Vaccinations are now UTD... Teeth OK and will be done and or re-checked in 6 months. Horse is about 100 pounds underweight from optimal score of a 5 on the scale. He is getting exercise himself by pacing, trotting, cantering the fence line when the neighbors horses go out of sight... Ridden only once since he came home but I have lunged him gently every other day now the heat & humid weather is upon us. Then a cool water hosing done and again in the evening hours...he sweats so in the sun {so do I} I know he is settling in, but so tempted to give my gelding "Mare Magic" to calm his anxiety!!

Ideally, I would feed Sand Clear,.., but Red would NEVER eat it. I used to feed bran mashes, but stopped that practice, given that it could throw off the balance of calcium/phosphorus ratio. I say seek out good quality hay, plenty of water, and Sand Clear if he will eat it. JMO

PLEASE, do not over think your self. use metamucil once a month. bran mash is going to make him more jittery and have the poops for days. and hot. you do not want him to get hotter than he is already with his pacing. he will settle. do not forget he has been with horses all of his life and now he is basically alone. sure he sees the horses over the fence but they are sometimes out of sight.
just give him his hay. grain and salt and water. he will be fine. do the poop in the water test if you want to see if he is collecting sand.

I did the poop test this morning.. Hubby was not thrilled with me...he has never seen that done, a learning experience for him. Wait till he has to actually collect it...
He had enough sand I know it needs done before it accumulates to much more.
The poops isn't such an issue as he is outside most of the time so lucky me not having to do stalls to often. He piddles outside too so far...
He has a mineral block which he hasn't touched yet, so he has about 1 teaspoon of sea salt added to his feed. He drinks about 20 gallons of water a day right now...not bad. In the morning the grass is wet from dew so he also gets moisture from that... I did the pinch neck test, he isn't dehydrated so we're good in that direction.
He is doing fine and so will we...
I'm fretting and worrying.... I know...give it a rest!! ...keep telling myself....
...........ENOUGH!!

I still fret over my first born and you know how old he is by his pictures... if I do that with this horse... You guys are going to hate me!!
It has been to many years since they were in my backyard...and now I know to much. Being a kid and innocent was great..now the what-if is killing me making me second and third guess what I truly know.
Cripe, it is how I made my living for so many years working in the horse world...it is coming back and my confidence in myself...if I could just stop the what-if I would be fine {and a lot less gray haired!}
....I'll enjoy my iced tea please, that is a non-alcoholic one you know! I near never drink... don't like the taste of most alcohol drinks.
I'm always the designated driver!

No we will not hate you , we will try to calm you and have you stop and just relax, it will be ok. if you feel the jitters. just walk away and stop thinking too much. and yes, tea with mint is great. or perhaps camomile tea with honey is a good one for the nerves. if you mix your own tea, use some yarrow or tansey in it that will really make you calm.
