Not what you want to hear but Isis has been desensitized to death but is still spookily unpredictable as you know!
I think just time is the key:)

Thanks for the pictures in the photo contest Terry. I was thinking about this thread when I made that category!. You're welcome! Thank you for thinking about this thread when you made that category. It gave me the perfect opportunity to share some of my fun training pictures on The Other Place. Hopefully it will get other people posting in the contest, too!

Not what you want to hear but Isis has been desensitized to death but is still spookily unpredictable as you know! I think just time is the key:) I think that time, repetition, and release of pressure at the right time are all helpful, but I think you have to factor in the horse's temperament as well. Unfortunately some horses just seem to be more naturally spooky than others and it's difficult to train it out of them.

The last Horse and Rider had an article by Avila on dealing with quirky horses. Not all that in depth but interesting.

A friend of mine had a mare that she competed on in working cowhorse. She was great at home or at the trainer's but would always find some little thing at a competition that would mess her up and she wouldn't do well. They worked with her for several years and she did it even with the trainer who was determined to get it out of her. My friend finally gave up on her and sold her.

I've been meaning to post this picture for a while now, but life got busy and I forgot.
I have worked with the cowboy curtain from the ground with both of my horses, but I never had it up when I went riding to try riding either of them through it. Finally one day I made sure to put it up before I went riding so I could try riding Sis through it. She did great! At some point I'll have to make sure I have it up when I'm going to ride Zena so I can try riding her through it. Zena has always been a little more hesitant about it than Sis, but she's doing much better with it now, so hopefully she'll ride through it fine when the time comes too. In the meantime, here is a picture of me riding Sis through the cowboy curtain for the first time.

The weather has finally been nice enough for me to start doing a little desensitizing training with Pocket.
She's no longer afraid of the mega jolly ball.
She didn't want any part of the tarp at liberty, but once I haltered her up she seemed to understand that meant it was time to get to work and she settled right in and did great with it!
Ground tied standing on the tarp.
I was able to put the tarp all over her body.
And she led around with the tarp on her back like a pro.

Thanks ladies. Pocket is coming along nicely. It's been a long, slow process (winter didn't help), but she's getting better and less flighty every day. She really is a little sweetie!
Yesterday Pocket and I had a date with the round pen for the first time. We did some lunging (she does great to the left, but won't go to the right ), desensitizing to the lunge whip and my hands all over her body (I'm still working on getting her to allow me to clean her teats), backing (a little stubborn, but not bad), leading (she leads like a pro ), and yielding the hindquarters (she figured that one out quickly and is doing great with it). After all of that I let her rest while tied, groomed her (I still need to work on her mane and tail) and saddled her up for the first time. She stood calmly and quietly the whole time, and acted like getting saddled was no big deal at all (YAY!! ). After I had her saddled I flopped the stirrups around, banged on the saddle a bit, lunged her in the saddle, and led her while saddled and she was perfect. I think she's ready to start giving my granddaughters pony rides! smileys-flowers-548267
Because she just looks so darn cute in it, here's a picture of Pocket saddled for the first time in her new saddle pad and saddle. (I realize the cinch needs to be adjusted, but the saddle is new and the leather is stiff, so I worked on that after I took it off her.)

She is so very cute Terry....
Pocket was a dull diamond who is being polished to brilliance by you!!
I wonder if her lunging left but not right has to do with her pony ride days....they are always led to the left and if she worked on a "fixed" wheel design pony ride where the ponies are tethered one behind the other....she only knows "Go Left"...

I keep saying she is way to cute all the time and she is. you have a great little pony and she knows she is in the right place. try walking her from the right so she understand you can be on her so called wrong side. and perhaps use a lunge whip to make a few steps around you and praise her. i have a feeling she just does not understand the left and right. and she can go both ways.

Yep, horselady, I tried using the lunge whip to get her to go to the right - so far she just acts confused and scared. Just like with everything else with her, I'll just keep slowly and patiently working on it with her. I'm sure she'll eventually get it. I have found with her that she's much better on the left for almost everything. I have a feeling no one really spent much time working on training anything on her right side, but she's coming along. The more she learns to trust me, the more confident she becomes, and the more willing she is to try for me. I didn't expect her to be as much of a project as she is, but I'm enjoying the journey with her.
hl4l, I never thought about the fixed wheel thing from her pony ride days. I don't know if she was ever on one of those, but she certainly could have been, and that would explain a lot! Like I said, I will just continue to work with her and I'm sure she'll eventually have that "ah ha" moment when she realizes that she can go to the right!
Thanks to all of you for your many compliments on my sweet little Pocket Pony. She is about the cutest thing I've ever seen, and a total sweetheart.
