I have been thinking about this little girl for a longtime. She has always been a kennel dog. Her first owner used her as a breeder. When he lost his business he was going to just dump her, so she was picked up by another breeder. She didn't fit with his breeding, or hunting program, so she just sat in her kennel. She has never known love or a home. I know you can't see it, but she is very skinny under her winter woolies. So this is Mica. She is a 12 year old registered English Setter. Attachment Deleted

She is beautiful...
Years ago we had a Irish Setter...what a dog. If Mica is anything like our dog....incredible!

My view on Mica is go get her. and let her live the remaining time on earth knowing what love is, what a sofa is. and what regular food is all about. we bought rotties from a breeder and they were in horrible condition. all thin, their coats not shiney and their eyes were dull and they had given up on life. from the first few days being here with me they started to blossom, to the point that they became my guardians. so give her a home and love and she will repay you ten fold. smileys-dogs-171634

Oh she is beautiful, just look at that face.
My mom rescued a breeder dog from a puppy mill, and it was very skittish, still is, but is sooo protective of her and loves her like crazy. Slowly he has opened up.

It has been fun to watch her evolve. When I got her home, it was almost like she didn't see me. She wouldn't look at me, or respond to my voice. After a couple days she started asking for attention, and now, if I pick up her leash she jumps up and down. She loves to go for walks. I wasn't sure how this was going to go, but it looks like turning her into a pampered pooch, is going to be easier than I thought.

our son in law breeds, and trains english setters. they have 10-15 in their kennels at any given time. he does field trials, and has won thousands of $$$, and although the dogs are very sweet they seem "defeated" they have blank stares (to me) and although they have a high end establishment (award winning) it is a business, and the 3 in the house are loved, and retired. the ones in the kennels are just objects to make money, and show off, it is sad ...

Kennels are not a place for a dog to spend his life in. They are social cretures, they need to be part of a familly and loved.

I think that is what Mica was like. The highlight of her day was, if she got food in her food bowl, nothing else. It was so hard to get through to her for the first few days. Now she seems to be stuck to my leg. English setters are the best. Mica loves attention and wants to be a part of everything. I understand they are wonderful hunting dogs, but there seems to be so much more to Mica than that. They are great family dogs, not just great hunting dogs.

oh, i couldnt agree more. you made her life so much brighter they are very sweet , gentle dogs. i have ZERO use for him as a husband, father, or dog "trainer". the fact that he has numerous trophies, awards, dog food (his dogs)won, even guns, clothing, and trips, the cruelty he uses (per my grandsons, ages 10 & 12) he deserves NOTHING, especially his family, and sad, loyal dogs ...

Mica had her vet visit today. The vet wants to give her a couple months before we think about any dental work. He also does not want to spay her at this time. She has a mammary tumor. He wants me to keep a very close eye on it for the next two months, then he will re-evaluate her. If I notice any changes I am supposed to get her in right away for surgery. He really didn't elaborate on what having a mammary gland tumor means for Mica. He was just adamant that I keep a close eye on it. Well darn. I was really hoping she could have a long and carefree life with us. I guess I don't know that she won't have several more carefree years, but I am really disappointed about the tumor.
It really doesn't matter though. She will have whatever life she has left, only now she will live in a home with people who love her, instead of in a cold, dirty, lonely kennel.

no matter how much time she has left, you will show her that not all humans are bad and that there is a lot more to life.

So great for Mica to get to a experience a loving home in her older age. She sounds like a really nice dog too. I am a little surprised that your veterinarian recommended waiting so long before addressing the mammary tumor. About 50% of mammary tumors are malignant (adenocarcinomas), and those that are tend to metastasize early and aggressively. Early excision of the tumor, possibly along with surrounding glands and lymphnodes, along with OHE (as the hormones stimulate tumor growth) is always my recommendation. Did he mention that there were other health concerns that made it necessary to put off surgery for such a long time? Just sounds odd to me.... Did he explain his rationale behind waiting? If not, I would ask. Best of luck with Mica. Hopefully the tumor is in the benign category. Whatever happens, I am sure she is much happier than she's every been before just having a real human family.

Maybe he wants her to gain some weight. I didn't ask him about the cost of the surgery. I just got a pretty big bill paid off there. I really don't know why?? It could be because I have drug in discarded animals to him in the past, and told him to see if they could be saved, but only if it would be $200.00 or less. I may need to call him and tell him Mica is different. I chose her. She wasn't just dumped on me.

I didn't get to talk face to face with the vet, but did visit with a friend of mine who works there, and asked her to tell him my concerns. She called me back and said, "he says 50% of the tumors are benign, and won't cause a problem." In other words he wants me to look on the glass half full side of things. The other thing is, she told me, even if it is cancerous, other than removing the lesion, at Micas age and health we probably would not treat anyway. He also felt that the tumor could be larger at this time than it normally would be because she is in heat. I have worked with my vet for a long time. He is probably looking at a larger picture than I am. I will just have to trust his judgment.

I understand, Diamondgirl. Makes sense, as long as you both are on the same page. No right or wrong answers, but it's nice to know the reasons behind a recommendation so you can make an informed decision Best of luck to you and Mica!

I am sure you are going to make Mica's life so wonderful and yes kennel dogs are lifeless , when i got 3 of the breeders rotties they did not know when to duck or lie down when i was near them. they thought i was going to swat them for standing or sitting up. after time they learned to love me and go for rides, walks. and be inside the house and yes in their kennel when night came. but they were happy , well fed, never hit again. and never abused.
one thing to be aware of, a unspayed female at any age can get pyrometria. infected uterus the tell tale signs is going off food, and secreting a goey, reddish brown discharge. take to vet immediately for surgery and insist the dog be looked at. 3 of mine that i got from the breeder got it. and i did save their lives.
oh and we need more photos to be kept updated on her.
