I agree, Diamondgirl, but for some reason the all black cats just don't seem to be very popular. I had an all black rescue kitten once. I thought he was as cute as can be, and he was a total love bug! I think when people see an all black cat next to more "colorful" cats, their eye is just drawn to the more colorful ones.

Adopting an animal by color? Can we get any more stupid? I don't think so! Though I did know this one gal who wanted a cat whose color coordinated with her furniture, sheesh, I find that after a short time my furniture coordinates with our pets When we moved my mom up here we moved in her furniture too. So now, of all things, we have a BLACK sofa! Couldn't be a worse color for folks who have pets. Plus it has three sets of cushions which hoard all kinds of misbegotten junk underneath... Hey, maybe we should be the ones to adopt all of the black dogs and cats! smileys-flowers-548267

I think it's just all the stupid superstitions about black cats. I understand that shelters won't adopt out black cats around Halloween, due to stupid, evil people. I'm so happy to live in the country, but I still keep a close eye on the black ones! Yes, adopt a black adult.

Oh, good point! I didn't even think about the silly superstitions about black cats. You're right, that could also have something to do with why they are less likely to be adopted. So sad.
A friend of mine had a litter of kittens, and the majority of the kittens were all black. Actually this was like her 3rd litter of kittens in a short period of time. I kept begging her to please get her adult cats fixed, but she ignored me and kept allowing her cats to breed. Anyway, she learned the hard way that no matter how cute those kittens are, it's not always easy finding homes for them, and it's next to impossible to find homes for the solid black ones. Eventually she got sick and tired of having so many cats and kittens running around her house, so one day she just loaded up all but 2 of her cats and kittens and took them all to the animal shelter! It broke my heart because I knew that the chances of those babies all finding homes and not getting put to sleep were very slim. I had just been to her house a couple weeks earlier and had been playing with the kittens. They were so sweet! She asked me to take some, but I told her I really didn't need anymore cats. After we found out what she did, hubby and I both felt terrible about it. We agreed that, had we known, we would have taken a couple of them. At least we'd have known that those we took would be safe and would get fixed! Some days I just have to remind myself that I can't save them all.
I will say that I'm glad that so many shelters now refuse to allow black cats to be adopted out around Halloween. It's frightening thinking about some of the sick people out there, and why they might want those black cats at that time of year. afraid

All cats and kittens are in danger, with the idiots and people who just don't care. A friend, who rescues and fixes, said he will never advertise in the paper again. A man came out and admitted he was looking for snake food. He said baby bunnies from the pet store were getting too expensive.

How do you feed 15 barn cats? You build a trough, of course!
And for those cats who prefer to dine alone, be sure to have individual seating available as well.

Yes, those actually are my barn cats (minus 1 - Casper was not at dinner the night I took those pictures, so instead of 15, there are only 14 of them there). A few of the cats were in both pictures because they started at the trough, but then moved to the "individual dining area", so between the 2 pictures it looks like there are more than 14 there, but there's not.
On page 1 of this thread I introduced each of my cats individually, but the short answer to your question is: A few of the cats we adopted on purpose, 6 of our current cats were born here (before I got everyone spayed/neutered), some of them have been dumped here, and 2 of them used to be intact feral tom cats that just showed up and decided to stay. All 15 of my barn cats are now fixed and tame.
Between the dog, horses, and cats, our feed bill does get a bit steep, but I love my furbabies and would do anything for them.

I just love your kitty's. I only have 5, so you are by far, the most wonderful cat lady..... I like all of them. Cats come in so many wonderful colors. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have one of every color. (((dream))) BUT!! how would you ever afford the food.

Jinx is so pretty!
and Black cats have trouble being adopted because some people are superstitious and simply don't want them. A lot of shelters will refuse to adopt them out 30 days before halloween as well. Apparently people think it's fun to get a black cat for halloween then they get rid of it right after (which is completely ridiculous to me!).
Edit: just realized this was all mentioned! Didn't see page 2!!

I didn't know cats could get heart worms. My vet has never said I needed to get them heart worm pills. Maybe that's because they are inside cats. But still!! We get mosquitos in the house sometimes.
