i am dealing with one.. first one in all the years i have owned horses.. had the vet out and did you know that you are not supposed to give bute.?? well i did not.. it does not allow the infection to pop. vet also says to soak the hoof in epsom salts and put either the black goo or the green slime.. i chose the green slime. the infection came out just behind her hoof between the heel bulb and i can actually stick a knife into the hole about 1/2 inch.. she is way off on the foot.. and of course i have it wrapped. it has been 4 days since the infection is oozing out.. anyone know how long i have to soak. and how long this is going to cause her pain..

Anytime I dealt with hoof abscess, once ruptured the horse was "less" lame and more comfortable. Sore but not on their head sore... I soaked as long as it oozed to keep cleaner along with using drawing salve, the black stuff, I used gauze-padding and wrapped. I guess it was about 5 days drainage time and I would be positive it was clear of offending ooze so would probably err on the side of a extra day or soak. You should be seeing visible proof on the wraps of puss fluid still evacuating the hoof interior. Not only seen but smell the foul scent of infection... Depending upon the situation there were times when the ooze slowed that I did flush out with a curved tipped syringe...what I can't remember is what I flushed with {my mind just blanked}.... I did that flushing under vets guidance and instruction though, never on my own.
If you are not seeing improvement in another day, by Monday, I would call the vet for a phone consultation and update as a minimum if not a return visit. I wonder if you have multiple abscesses brewing and readying to blow open in another area...keep your eyes open. Sometimes those abscesses seem to have several pockets of infection needing a escape route.

I am soaking it and the poor horse is dead lame.. head bobbing and pawing the ground with the hoof. i am going to call her tomorrow and have her come out and recheck. i just hope she did not do something and i need to exray.. i am afraid something might be broken. she is still ozzing some pus. smells awful.

How is she this morning? The head bobbing and pawing pain indicator bothers me, a lot!!
I know the vet said no bute...but as an anti-inflammatory I would think it would offer some relief of swollen tissues and a faster escape of the pus poisons... I also did not know not to give it and did give it in the past...maybe something new? So if no bute...then what can you give as this much discomfort is also not healthy for the animal...
Still such a strong odor makes me think she may have more than just a abscess but a true infection... You may need x-rays to make sure she did not in-bed something in the hoof unknown about...she did something.
Hope she turned a corner last night and is better this morn...but I would still be getting in touch of not having the vet back out if nothing else for "peace-of-mind"... ...

I agree with you on all counts,, i was told by another vet to use "tomorrow" inside the infection.. and to use bute for the pain.. go figure.. put 10 vets in a room and get 11 answers.. she is still head bobbing. if this continues i will have to have her xrayed to see what else is going on.. thanks for your concern and wishes.

How is she doing today Jo?? Any improvement? .... I used tomorrow in her hoof .. and she seeeem,s to be a bit better.. not constantly pawing the ground but eating and moving around the yard. easier... skipped soaking on thanksgiving and going to soak again and insert more of that cow mastitis medicine inside her hoof.. no the vet did not suggest to do it.. but someone i trust that has been working horses feet for 30 years. oh and i was told to give bute.. and that is what i am doing now.. thanks for asking..

on sunday she decided not to eat. i figured it was because of the pain meds.. well i took her off of them for two days prior.. i turned her out on my lawn and by night she was hungry.. i also gave her stomach pills and wet down her food with warm water and sugar.. perhaps that did the trick..

It's possible the horse got a puncture in the sole of their hoof, and the abcess just blew out the back instead. I recall that being the case with a horse at the barn who had an abcess blow at about the same spot. It wasn't getting better like basically every other horse does after the abcess opens up, and the vet came out and I believe had to xray the entire foot to find the issue.

My vet did the hoof tester everywhere on her hoof and said that there should be a blow out. in the rear of the hoof.. i have a feeling it was from infection but not sure where it started. the 3 holes are still open and i am injecting with the tomorrow. ... today she is better and actually is walking with just a slight off step.. and is really hungry.. she is 34 years old, never sick a day in her life.. i will look for another hole just in case i am missing something.

Update,, the mare was a bit gimpy so i looked at her foot and scraped out some dirt and her frog is loose.. not just the frog where it usually peels but the entire frog area from the heel to the point.. hubby says to leave it alone and someone i consulted about her abcess says to cut it off. i will wait and see what happens.

If she is shedding it naturally... Till some new material is in place... I think I side with hubby and would leave it be for now... Keep it clean as possible and preventative treat so she now get compromised... But remove it...owwww!!!
Not yet.

Have you any "original" Listerine or a generic?
50/50 with water and soak to kill any bacteria as cleaning it will be difficult and uncomfortable for her. Cover her hoof while in a soaking boot and let her stand in the solution for 1/2 hour...
Some use ACV, but I was warned by my farrier to do so carefully as some horses have bad reactions to ACV touching their skin and nerve areas...
Do not use either though full strength as it is to strong..
Just a thought.

It is what I've heard, not first hand knowledge. Supposed to kill the bacteria and diseased tissue but not hurt the live healthy tissue.... Works good on rain rot and on surface abrasions, this I have seen my friends used it on. I know Tractor Supply by me carries it, think it is quart size and won't break the bank like a lot of topicals do lately.
