I am thinking of getting my mom some sort of device she can use to just get on the internet and surf around but all I've ever used was a computer/laptop. She really doesn't need all that. So what alternatives are there? Can you get online on an iPad? What do y'all use?

I have a dell note book. It's a basic one. If all she is going to do is surf it would work. Plus she can take pics with it. I only use it when I go on road trips or camping. If she likes to read a Kindle fire would be another option. Lint loves his. I prefer my laptop.

My son has a tablet that he uses for playing games on. That has internet access on it but no keyboard or typing ability.... Kindles also have internet capabilities... Also notebooks, very small laptop can do internet and she can type but has no disc hard-drive capabilities.
For the price of some of those, you could buy her a cheap laptop from BestBuy and she would have it all.... Here is one from a NOW sale... $149.00 www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-ideapad-100s-11-6-laptop-intel-atom-2gb-memory-32gb-emmc-flash-storage-red/4475000.p?id=1219751168924&skuId=4475000
The Holiday sales have begun....start looking now for sales before the sales and to ship to your house instead of fighting the traffic... Exactly what I am doing today myself. By tonight 90% of my shopping will be accomplished , not paid for in cash {thank-you credit cards} ....but on the way to me.
A few options for you....
Happy Shopping!!

How is her eyesight?
I would think about a note book, or a small laptop. The note books are lightweight and not cumbersome. They don't have the extras, like a dvd drive (but you can purchase an external dvd drive that plugs in if wanted), they may or may not have good enough power to play a movie without sometimes lagging here and there. It seems you don't need that though. So for email and surfing it would be fine, and it has a regular keyboard.
I have a Samsung tablet, and it's good for being portable, but a little inconvenient because it doesn't have the ease of a standard keyboard. If she doesn't know her way around a computer, I can see it being a little confusing for her. Now that I've gotten a smartphone, I almost never use the tablet.
Good luck

Why not a small asus that is about 13 inches, has a key pad and is small enough to carry around the house. i find a tablet is hard for me to look at two things at a time. in other words i can not load photos from photo bucket to here as two windows need to be open. i find it easier on a laptop. perhaps she would prefer that .windows 10 is not easy to manipulate so perhaps a used dell or hp .

My dell has a detachable key board. I use a wireless mouse with it. It has a great screen to it. but has no drives. Just a basic one. Good for games and pics. I use it for internet when I travel, but I have a hot spot for access. You could also tether it to a smart phone.
HL all my Xmas has been done. I use pay pal credit. 6 months no interest. It's great to have. Especially when you have to buy a camper fridge. I refuse to upgrade to Win 10. There are bugs with it. Lint did it and it wiped out his games. So he had Short restore it back to 8

I refuse to upgrade to Win 10. There are bugs with it. Lint did it and it wiped out his games. So he had Short restore it back to 8 That happened to me too when I upgraded my laptop. All my games I had are gone and now even what I could return to it doesn't work well.... No one else in my house is allowed to do the upgrade and I'm dealing with the "kinks" of this system....frustrating sometimes they are. I'm getting tired of pop-up messages telling me something didn't load right....... They all loaded just fine till I upgraded!
Consider buying a used computer from a computer store where they do repairs..... The guy I go to for "fixes" sells refurbished computers for a pittance and she could have Windows "?" in a easier working style for her. They say the Mac computers are very simple to use... don't know about that as I've never used a Mac.
