I'm glad to hear you and your friend will be moving paddocks in October but until then keep a close eye on those hooves, not only for thrush but also for things like white line (which Mister got from living in a wet environment).

No id say their paddock is the worst. My horse is now in a drier one with the bad mare. The new one is drier too. Good news: my friends gelding does not appear lame at all today. Maybe he was just a bit off yesterday. Whew.
My horse still looks terrible. :-(

Farrier came to check on her today and cut out two abscesses! One in each foot. Fluid was clear and followed by some blood so no deep infection. I really hope she turns around now!
I'm 22 weeks pregnant and getting bigger. I really hope my riding career isn't totally done until March which is when I'll be healed from my c-section.

Two! Poor girl! I guess if she's going to get them might as well do it all at once. But how nasty for her!

Now she's SUPER lame on the front left. She won't even pick up the right. But she gave me the left and I put iodine in the hole and some keratex on. And I gave her some bute. This is all so frustrating.

aes... I'm no expert by any means but this isn't adding up right. She had a abscess that is now blown open {from the farrier or not} Abscess on both front feet not just one. If it is like a tooth abscess it should have soreness but relief too. A noticeable difference in how she feels... She would be tender and sore but not so sore she won't, refuses to transfer her weight to the offending foot... wag finger
I'm sorry... To me you need to call your vet and at least ask about what you are seeing. There could be more than a simple blown out abscess here happening... Either way, if that sore you may need more than simple bute for her... Make a phone call... you don't need your blood pressure up from worry and you are worried by how you write.

wow that is not on the plan, i wonder where the abcesses are? is it possible to take a photo so we can see what you are dealing with. and has it been suggested to put styrofoam and diaper taped on with duck tape to keep her comfortable walking on something soft. and has the vet suggested antibiotics ??

No antibiotics for now as the fluid was clear. The right foot abscess was on the heel and the left (very sore one) was on the toe. We were packing it when we were trying to draw the abscess out but now we want to concentrate on hardening the hoof not softening it further. So iodine, keratex and bute for now.

We packed and wrapped the hoof tonight after treating with iodine and she's so much more comfortable. Just put iodine on the other hoof, no wrap. She's moving almost sound with the wrapping on. We didn't soak it as we don't want to weaken the hoof, just rinsed and dried it well. I hope she will just heal now!!

This is what it looked like tonight after I unwrapped it and cleaned it. This needs antibiotics right? I should get the vet?

What do your "guts" tell you to do?
Act upon them...they seldom are wrong.
Keep it clean as possible.
In the picture it shows small dots of debris in the hoof flesh...they concern me because I can't tell exactly where they are or their origin... Yes...I would get a vet to look at it if it were my horse.. ...

My horse abcessed not long ago and there is no pink to be seen in the hole. In fact the hole is hollow even after cleaning. The pink to me is a sign of something else. More like the laminae are swelled inside of the hoof capsule. I would want x-rays justd to make sure there is nothing in that hoof.
I have had two horses abcess this year - one because she over reached and bruised both heel bulbs- the abcess came out the coronary band even there - no pink tissue was seen and that abcess opening was an inch long.
My gelding abcessed from a stone bruise and his opening is in almost the exact same place as yours - and no pink.

Thank you.

The vet and farrier agreed that that is new sole tissue coming in and it looks very clean and not infected, so just keep doing what I'm doing.
Sigh, this is such a long road.

Wow- glad to hear it is not an issue. Never seen it before but I will remember that if it ever happens here.

aes...
Were they able to give you any idea of how much longer you need to keep covered and "clean" of debris when they saw it? How much longer for it to heal in enough it not look so...
Poor horse, poor you for having to sit and watch and not be able to ride her. Soon the riding won't be a feasible option for you with your pregnancy... ...baby comes first.

I'm really not sure. 2 weeks ago they said 4-6 weeks. That was when we thought it was just bruising. It's been a lot worse since the farrier drained the abscesses.
I'm definitely starting to get too big....

I posted this question on the other place and the googler gave me an annoying know it all answer that completely disagrees with my vet and my farrier. She needs to go away!

You have to remember that she is on a barefoot, barefoot and more barefoot campaign. She has shod her horses only for the show ring and has on more than one occasion said she bucked the system by not being shod, not hoof painted and other things of that nature. Don't not listen though to what she makes comment on...she is knowledgeable and sees things because of the research she has done now for years. She has learned a lot, both good and bad. Her presentation of it though sometimes is not palatable to our ears and she is to the point and gruff. Taken with a I'll learn from your words but also depend upon my farrier and vet to guide me... You know if things were to continue to progress at the pace they are now that knowledge is something to draw on and present as... "Someone mentioned this about... Does it have any merit here?"
A thought many know little about... Her love, knowledge and dedication to her horse Smilie... She had been advised to euthanize that horse because of such severe hoof problems. She made it her business to get educated and use that education to try to help Smilie... Several years have now passed since the animal encountered such devastating hoof damage...each year a improvement seen. Due to her diligence...that horse is sound. She is riding Smilie again...a horse many gave up on and told her to destroy. She does know, she does see and that is something to keep stored in the back of your mind just in case... Remember what she wrote, keep it written someplace in case that place goes belly up and it is lost... You may not want to hear it but she may be onto something here....
Yes, I am defending her. She had good intentions with her post and answer to you. A heads-up of possibility if you will. Personally, I have asked her about a few things when I got answers all over the place from others over their. She was 100% dead on right with what she told me....
I offer you good luck in clearing this up and you continue to stay strong and healthy yourself during this pregnancy. ... jmo...
