Isn't it grand what people will do to their "beloved" animals for a ribbon or trophy? Disgusting is a better description! Or what some trainers will do for "recognition"..... some recognition.
That reining bred mare probably was started as a 15 month old, she was in the show pen as a 2 year old from the sound of it , competing hard with a "winning & proved" bloodline as she has. Sadly, she was misused and abused because they don't all end up that way....rode hard and put away sopping wet would be what one of my friends would describe her as...she is done, finished and a large maintenance bill soon coming to keep her "sound & healthy" if hock injections and a bad leg are considered sound.
How sad.... What so many horses endure for their human....
I applaud you Apollo for putting Benny's health and future soundness ahead of that blue ribbon....some people truly don't get it or care enough to put the animal first. Your attention to those growing milestones will keep your animal sound, rideable and happy for more years than rushing him through at this point...in the end you will have a great career doing whatever it is you intend or hope for...and a happy willing partner under saddle.

I don't think any horse should be fully ridden until 3. A 2yro being trained for show isn't developed enough to take the stress. And I hate the low head. Let them carry themselves naturally. I think the top end should be level. I rode a friends QH that had it's head low and I felt totally strange. Just isn't natural.

When the head is to low I swear I'm going off over and down the neck... hate it.It may be what is desired in the show pen, but is not in the interest of the animal to "false frame" it like this... If I was "horse hunting" {I am again} and presented with one with such a head carriage, I would walk away. I dislike it that much...can you tell I am not a "show" rider... Any showing I did on "my" horses it was done as fun only and only what the animal was capable and conditioned to do and withstand by me.... Now, what I had to ride in shows as a job requirement, not enjoyed or like by me and could not wait to get off! I ride for me, against myself to better me and my mount...for no other reason, period. I could care less about ribbons & trophy... I was and still am a advocate for my animals, not someones ego.. .........I quit the show ring and now only ride for my pleasure...back to liking my hobby again!!

I once rode a four beater, peanut roller horse. Her head was so low it was like it wasn't there, it was a very uncomfortable feeling like I could just flip over the front of the saddle and fall off. She ended up with stifle issues and became very sour and her owner sold her to a family that just wanted a good horse for fun and trail riding. This filly is relisted without the price and they have a couple of other ads for paint babies as well as older ones.

You have problem with low head, we have problem with high head. Both are pointless.
