I think you hit on two things that a truly good trainer does, RedZip, that they are patient and that they know when to ride through something and when to correct it. That is such a good lesson for all of us. Would you mind describing in more detail what these lessons are like? I want to squeeze out as much information as I can

That is such a good lesson for all of us. Would you mind describing in more detail what these lessons are like? I want to squeeze out as much information as I can Grr, I keep forgetting my IPad when shes here She starts the first few minutes of each lesson lunging both ways,.., then she rides him working all 3 gaits, focusing on his canter departures (my problem with him) on the left (his bad side). He is very happy working with her, altho tries his 'shenanigans' with her too. then I usually ride him for about 10 minutes at the end, except he was very hot today, so not much but walk. i have also asked her to critique me and my position, as well, help me with him in the form of a coach. Its working out very well, except for the heat, but Zippy needs this time,.., he REALLY just needs TIME. We have discussed my goals, and my goals are WTC both ways without all the FUSS he puts on. She has successfully gotten him cantering on the hard lead, left lead, each week, and he continues to improve with his understanding. Zippy is broke, he is just HOT! I'm not used to a hot horse, and he is a FUSS BUCKET. But it gives me confidence to see someone else successfully riding him, I learn from watching,.., AND, he is getting time, and talent from a good rider, that I can't give right now. Hopefully, this fall I will have better weather, he will have more time with a good rider, and WE will have an improved relationship from everyone's time and effort.
I firmly believe that Zippy is worth the $ investment of a trainer, and that, altho he isn't Red, he and I will have a good, successful relationship, that will only improve with these efforts. Fingers crossed!

I did forget to mention that she has me practicing half halts with him under saddle, as a way to have him stay in control when he starts to get HOT 884530 We're just trying to 're program' his brain to react differently when asked to canter. i can handle the trot, jog, etc., but Zippy loves to 'bolt' and goof around at the canter. A few times around the ring and he settles, but I really want him SETTLED better, so hopefully thats where this trainer and I can take him,.., FINGERS CROSSED!

Thank you. My nerves would be shot if I had a horse like that. I so admire folks like you who have such strong characters that you can deal with that. I also think that the way my mind works is so much closer to someone with ADD with so much detail swirling and dashing about in there. But again, a person needs to know beyond thinking about it how to deal with the things a horse will do that are safety issues and need to be addressed. Experience is a huge help.

Just watching her calmly handle his 'shenanigans' lets me know that that is the best way to deal with him. Altho I do not necessarily enjoy Zippy's kind of challenge, he really is a nice horse, who just gets bored doing the ring work. Once we get him 're- programmed', I think he will be more enjoyable, and less of a PITA He's smart, and learns quickly.

I can appreciate the boredom, but I don't threaten people's health and well being when I'm bored, there's the difference that makes all the difference

He is definitely learning more self control, but I've really taught him that with TONS of ground work,.. our trainer is more focused with the under saddle work. One day,., he will be PERFECT

Zippy did AWESOME today in his lesson!! We moved out to the bigger field and he just shined in his performance Both leads, soft little jog trot, head down,.., for HER,.., with me, he's just more jazzed (super sensitive). Sooooooooo, we are going to start focusing more on ME now, shes going to work with him first 30 minutes or so, then work with ME and him, the last 20-30 minutes. Again, I forgot the IPad (grr), but she came early (7:30am) and I got off work late (10pm), so,., kind of, not my best time. So proud of my Zippy boy Kskatt, I think that article you posted on the 'other place' really made me think, and helped me get my shoulders back!

Sounds like lots of progress being made in a short amount of time! I can't wait to hear all about your adventures with Zippy.

Good news! I'd like to sneak in there and substitute my Ziggy for your Zippy and finally find someone who will do the job I feel so badly that things didn't work out to your satisfaction with Ziggy's trainer I did think that Smilie clearly explained what the expectations, as well, the timetable should be like for 30 days on a horse in training. My situation is a bit different than yours bc its all taking place in my back yard. I didn't like that she has become worse in the 'buddy' departmt. She is there to be ridden and learn ,.., TRAINED! It sounds like they are intimidated by Ms Ziggy

I'm so glad things are going so well with Zippy's trainer!
, I must have missed something. Is Ziggy not with the trainer anymore? I guess I'd better go find that thread.

Rode Zippy today and I really see improvement with his overall demeanor Not so jumpy, and not so SENSITIVE, ie. jumping away from legs, pressure, etc. Sooo happy that it is working out well for him,., and for me. A lot less spooky, and generally, a more willing attitude. I think this trainer is really going to help both of us,., am just very glad to get the help apple I will TRY to remember my IPad on Tuesday.

OMGoodness! That Zippy is doing soooooooo GOOD!! You would not believe that boy these days,.., Cantering like a saint, lead changes back and forth all of the field,., and FINALLY I'm getting the hang of his canter. He has A LOT of shoulder action so he is more bouncy at the canter, but once he gets a few strides forward he settles down nicely ,., and no more 'running off' these days. His trainer LOVES working with him Sooooo PROUD of him 884530
